Hezbollah leader signals readiness for regional escalation

Hezbollah leader signals readiness for regional escalation

Following fresh threats issued over the weekend by Iran-backed militias, Hezbollah leader Naim Qassem on Monday delivered a forceful speech signaling the group’s readiness to respond if tensions surrounding Iran escalate into open conflict.

Speaking against what he described as an increasingly volatile regional backdrop, Qassem warned that threats against Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei amount to threats against “millions, tens of millions, and even more,” framing them as an attack on the broader constituency that sees Khamenei as its leader.

“This is not something that can be ignored,” he said. “It is the responsibility of all of us to stand against this threat.”

Qassem said Hezbollah is committed to making all necessary preparations to confront such a scenario, arguing that an assassination would destabilize not only the region but the wider world due to the scale of those who identify with Iran’s leadership.

He described the threat as one that also targets Hezbollah directly and said the group has full legitimacy, in its view, to take whatever steps it deems necessary in response.

Addressing speculation over Hezbollah’s role in a potential war involving Iran, Qassem said various parties have recently sought assurances that the group would stay out of any confrontation involving Israel and the United States. He rejected that premise, saying Hezbollah is already part of the equation and exposed to potential aggression.

“We will choose the appropriate timing and the appropriate manner to act, whether through direct intervention or otherwise, according to the circumstances,” Qassem said, while stressing that Hezbollah would not remain neutral. “The precise form will be determined by the nature of the battle and by the interests at stake.”

The remarks followed explicit warnings from other Iran-aligned groups.

On Sunday, the secretary-general of the Iraqi militia Kataib Hezbollah, Abu Hussein al-Hamidawi, said his forces were preparing for a “comprehensive war” in defense of Iran and warned that any confrontation “will not be a picnic.” He also said fighters should be ready to mobilize if religious authorities declare jihad.

Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthi movement added to the tension by releasing a brief threat video captioned “Soon.”

Taken together, the statements point to Iran’s network of allied militias signaling readiness for a wider confrontation, raising the risk of a broader regional conflict.

Trump & Netanyahu agree that Hamas must disarm before Gaza reconstruction

Trump & Netanyahu agree that Hamas must disarm before Gaza reconstruction

U.S. President Donald Trump and Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu agreed that the next step in the Gaza Strip must be the disarmament of Hamas, following the return of the remains of Ran Gvili, the last Israeli hostage in Gaza, on Monday.

Trump's remarks came as a surprise after the U.S. had reportedly been pressuring Israelto open the Rafah border crossing with Egypt as part of the transition to the second phaseof the ceasefire plan, partly to enable the start of reconstruction in the Rafah area by the entry of building materials.

After praising Hamas’ cooperation in the operation, Trump also said that it is time for Hamas to disarm as specified in the peace deal. “Now we have to disarm Hamas like they promised," Trump stated.

While Hamas officials have repeatedly rejected disarmament, a spokesman for the group said that the recovery of Gvili’s remains demonstrates the group’s commitment to the terms of the deal.

Despite this statement, there is significant skepticism in Israel regarding Hamas’ willingness to disarm.

However, the disarmament of the terror organization could come as part of an amnesty deal, an anonymous U.S. official told Reuters on Monday.

“We are listening to many of their people talk about disarming. We think they're going to. If they don't disarm, then they've breached the deal. We think disarmament comes along with some sort of amnesty and candidly, we think we have a very, very good program to disarm," the official said.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reiterated Israel’s demand that Hamas disarm, while addressing the Knesset on Monday.

He had faced strong criticism from several ministers in the cabinet meeting where the government approved the reopening of the Rafah crossing once Gvili's remains were found.

“The next phase is not reconstruction,” Netanyahu emphasized, speaking at a special Knesset session, “The next phase is disarming Hamas and the demilitarization of the Gaza Strip.” He noted that Israel wants “to advance this phase, and not to delay it.”

However, he also repeated his claim that the disarmament would occur, warning, “It will happen the easy way or the hard way. But it will happen.”

EU's Deadly New Weapon Against Press Freedom:

EU's Deadly New Weapon Against Press Freedom: Already Wreaking Havoc
 TYLER DURDEN

In an extraordinary case that could decide the future of press rights in Europe, Berlin-based German-Turkish journalist Hüseyin Doğru is currently under European Union sanctions for his reporting, which left him completely unable to access his bank account for months.

Under orders from the EU, his assets were frozen, and these sanctions were dispensed with no trial or appeal. Currently, Doğru says he is not even allowed to leave Germany.

As Berliner Zeitung reports, Doğru completely exhausted all financial means, telling the paper that his bank has completely blocked access to his previously approved minimum subsistence allowance of €506. He stated that he can no longer support his family or even buy food for his two newborn children.

“Not only I, but also my wife and my three children are effectively being sanctioned,” Doğru, a left-wing journalist, said in the interview.

“The sanctions themselves stipulate that I am entitled to access to essential funds. The fact that my bank is nevertheless blocking these funds violates applicable law in my view,” he told the Berlin newspaper.

Since then, he has won some reprieve and regained access to his account on Jan. 22 through the actions of his lawyer, but a legal battle over the sanctions is continuing.

There are now fears that the extraordinary case may be a sign of where the future is headed, where an authoritarian EU can censor and financially ruin dissidents and journalists with no oversight or judicial review. Notably, similar sanctions could also be deployed against others, such as Roger Köppel, the Swiss editor-in-chief of the weekly Die Weltwoche.

The basis for the sanctions was his alleged connections to Russia, but the Berliner Zeitung indicates that so far, no proof has been presented to confirm this accusation, and more importantly, there was no trial or evidence provided to support this accusation.

Tether Launches USAT, A Federally Regulated, Dollar-Backed Stablecoin For The US Market

Tether Launches USAT, A Federally Regulated, Dollar-Backed Stablecoin For The US Market

Tether, the world’s largest digital asset company by stablecoin circulation, announced Tuesday the official launch of USA₮, a federally regulated, dollar-backed stablecoin designed specifically for use in the United States under the recently enacted GENIUS Act.

USA₮ is issued by Anchorage Digital Bank, N.A., a federally chartered U.S. bank and one of the first institutions approved to issue payment stablecoins under the new law, Tether said.

The launch marks Tether’s first stablecoin built to operate fully within the U.S. regulated financial system, following years of regulatory scrutiny around offshore-issued dollar tokens.

The debut follows the company’s announcement late last year detailing the token’s design and naming former White House Crypto Council Executive Director Bo Hines as CEO of Tether USA₮. With Tuesday’s rollout, USA₮ is now available to U.S. users seeking a dollar-backed token that complies with federal banking and stablecoin rules.

The GENIUS Act established the first nationwide framework governing stablecoins marketed to U.S. users, requiring full reserve backing, bank or qualified issuer status, and ongoing regulatory supervision. Under the law, offshore-issued stablecoins that do not meet these standards face restrictions across U.S.-regulated exchanges, banks, and payment platforms.

USA₮ is structured to meet those requirements. According to the company, Cantor Fitzgerald will serve as the stablecoin’s designated reserve custodian and preferred primary dealer, providing transparency and oversight of reserves from launch.

Anchorage Digital Bank will handle issuance, compliance, and on-chain settlement infrastructure.

Tether’s dominant role in the crypto space

While Tether’s flagship USD₮ remains the most widely used stablecoin globally, its offshore structure limited its role in the U.S. market under the new law.

USA₮ allows Tether to maintain USD₮’s international dominance while offering U.S. institutions a regulated alternative tailored to domestic payment and settlement systems.

“This launch represents a new chapter for digital dollars in the United States,” said Paolo Ardoino, CEO of Tether.

“USD₮ has proven at global scale that digital dollars can deliver trust and utility. USA₮ extends that mission with a federally regulated product made in America.”

Bo Hines said the new stablecoin is aimed squarely at institutional users. “USA₮ is designed to meet federal regulatory expectations while delivering stability, transparency, and responsible governance,” he said. “It ensures the United States remains competitive in the evolution of digital money.”

During its initial rollout, USA₮ will be available on platforms including Kraken, Crypto.com, OKX, Bybit, and MoonPay, with additional U.S.-regulated exchanges and banking partners expected to follow.

America's earthquake hotspot is more dangerous than feared as scientists make surprising discovery

America's earthquake hotspot is more dangerous than feared as scientists make surprising discovery

Scientists studying Northern California have uncovered previously hidden fault lines, raising alarms that seismic risk in the region may be underestimated.

For decades, the Mendocino triple junction was believed to be where three tectonic plates meet: the San Andreas Fault ending in the north, the Cascadia Subduction Zone in the south, and the Mendocino Fault in the east.

Because three major fault systems converge there, the area is one of the most active earthquake zones in the US and could produce a magnitude 8.0 quake.

Now, researchers have discovered that the junction actually contains at least five tectonic plates or fragments deep below the surface, making the region far more complex than previously thought.

That means there may be an unaccounted earthquake hazard in the area, and current models could be underestimating the true risk.

Because the junction lies off the coast and influences both the San Andreas and Cascadia systems, revisions to the model could affect risk calculations for millions of people along the West Coast.

Scientists compared the new findings to an iceberg, where most of the structure remains hidden below the surface.

Geophysicist Amanda Thomas of the University of California, Davis, said: “If we don’t understand the underlying tectonic processes, it’s hard to predict the seismic hazard.”

This discovery shows that the underground fault structure is more complicated than scientists thought.

If the models don’t include these hidden faults, they may underestimate how much stress is building up underground.

That means a larger earthquake could happen unexpectedly, because the hidden faults could suddenly release energy in ways the old models didn’t predict.

The team suspected something more complex was happening at the Mendocino Triple Junction, as a large magnitude 7.2 earthquake in 1992 occurred at a much shallower depth than expected.
